a reaction to dove's 'Real Beauty Sketches'

Something a little different from me today... This is a post I've been meaning to write since last month when I was writing an essay for my PR & communications module at uni. I used Dove's 'Real Beauty Sketches' as a case study of a viral advertisement and I had a lot of different thoughts about it (unfortunately completely unrelated to the topic of my essay!). It is described as a 'compelling social experiment that explores how women view their own beauty in contrast to what others see'; at the time of writing it has had over 50 million views on youtube, you have probably all seen it floating around facebook. The video shows a forensic artist drawing women; first according to how they describe themselves and then again according to a stranger's description. If you haven't seen it yet you can watch it here

Women as they described themselves on the left and as described by a stranger on the right.

The Good...

When I first saw it posted on a friends wall I loved it, and I think it's obvious why it has been received so positively. Beauty standards and self-perception are a really popular topic at the moment and the video is really emotive. Dove have got in touch with women's attitudes and their increasing apathy towards beauty standards which is partly what makes this campaign so effective; they are in effect standing up against their own industry which again helps them to get on side with their target audience. The ad does display some good points, mainly that women can be their own harshest critics and their self-perceived 'flaws' are not as prominent as they may believe. It supports self confidence by showing the women watching that even random strangers would describe them as beautiful.

The Bad...

However, Dove's integrity is somewhat questioned when you realise that their parent company is Unilever. Unilever run various other brands such as Lynx, who's provocative adverts have a very different message... and are perhaps perpetrators of the very same beauty standards Dove is apparently trying to shun. When you think about it a little more you realise that this advert supports narrow beauty standards itself - the main qualities that were seen as more desirable were being thinner and younger. While this may not be too shocking, other attractive features described were blonder hair and bluer eyes... Though African-American and Asian women were involved, all of the properly featured participants are white, and three of those are blonde with blue eyes! It doesn't really celebrate any sort of diversity in beauty.

The Ugly...?

The women are happier when they realise they are seen to look like the pictures on the right.... But what about people who really do look like the women on the left? Are they not beautiful too? Surely beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The message of the ad is 'women: you're more beautiful than you think' but who are Dove to say that  there is definitely a preferable way to look!
Another thing this ad does is elevate the importance of beauty... is being generically attractive the most important thing for a woman to be? What about other qualities such as being kind, strong, giving, or intelligent?

I would love to know what your thoughts are on this topic!

Coloured feathers are £15 and plain black are £10... there are loads of different trimmings too as you can see below. I do custom orders too and bigger more elaborate headdresses, they are perfect festival accessories! I'm offering readers of this blog free postage when you quote 'BLOGfree'.

I'm thinking about starting to sell on Asos Marketplace and maybe Etsy in the future, I'd love to know if any of you have experiences with these?

In other news this summer I'm going to be working at a Mexican food stall so I'll be going to a lot of festivals! Are any of you going to any?

moodboard & mixtape: 'your voice is like silver'

Hello! This is a little feature that is going to take the place of my old monthly music posts as well as possibly sweet stuff sunday as I haven't done either of them in a while. I stole a lot of inspiration for the style of this post from Breanna Rose's blog which is so beautiful and lovely and fantastic, you should go and have a look.

So recently the days have been getting a little sunnier and I'm getting really excited for festival season!  Finished my last essay for the year on Thursday... so now I am free! First festival is Love Saves the Day in Bristol which happens just across the road from me. I'm also going to be involved in doing the decor for it this year which I'm really really looking forward to. Are any of you going to any festivals this summer?

Here's a little bit of what I've been listening to recently too... quite a bizarre mix at the moment! If you click on the song's name it will take you to a youtube video :)
01.  'Facing West' - The Staves
02.  'Let it Die' - Fiest
03.  'Master Hunter' - Laura Marling
05.  'Get Lucky' - Daughter (Daft Punk cover)
06.  'Dreams' - Fleetwood Mac (Gigamesh edit)
07.  'Free' - The Boxettes
Hope you are all good and have been able to enjoy some of the sunshine!

exhibition - Mending at the Museum

Janet Haigh, Greek Proverb, handkerchief, embroidery

Stephanie Wooster, embroidery, zebra

Stephanie Wooster, embroidery

Just a couple of pictures I meant to put up ages ago from the Mending at the Museum exhibition at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.
"Stitching and Thinking is a research project born out of a love of stitched textiles and a conviction of the importance of retaining hand skills within creative practice. The project identifies and explores the values and current comtemporary thinking about hand-making skills reflected through the discipline of stitch."
I have always loved embroidery and think that, especially with written text, the form of embroidery offers something really firm and comforting. I love the red and white colours and the simplistic modern style used in these pieces. I can't wait to get a new sewing machine and get back into some embroidery!

p.s I would love to know what you all think of my new layout! I've finally had enough of pink.... for the mean time anyway.
